DUBAI, United Arab Emirates (Ticker) — Fifth seed Iroda Tulyaganova of Uzbekistan and eighth-seeded Henrieta Nagyova were upset Monday in the first round of the $585,000 Dubai Women’s Open.
Barbara Rittner of Germany posted a 6-2, 6-2 victory over Tulyaganova, who reached the second round here last year but has dropped her last three matches. Russia’s Anastasia Myskina joins Rittner in the second round as she defeated Nagyova, 6-3, 6-3.
Tina Pisnik of Slovenia dispatched Australian wild card Rachel McQuillan, 6-2, 6-4; Rita Grande of Italy overcame Adriana Gersi of the Czech Republic, 0-6, 6-4, 7-5; and Tatiana Panova of Russia got by Alicia Molik of Australia, 6-0, 5-7, 6-4.
The top four seeds — Venus Williams of the United States, American Monica Seles and Amelie Mauresmo and Sandrine Testud of France — each received byes into the second round.
